Sorry, there aren't any single-day or weekend passes. If you think you are going to make more than 12 individual trips a very likely scenario for tourists staying more than two days , buying a 7-Day Unlimited Ride card will be cheaper than paying 12 times. The time window does not activate until you swipe the card for the very first time at a turnstile to enter the system. For instance, you can buy the card on January 17, activate it on April 1, and it will expire at midnight between April 7 and April 8.
Unlimited cards always expire exactly at midnight on the 7th or 30th day , regardless of the time you activated the card on the first day. For instance, if you activate a 7-Day Unlimited Ride card on Monday morning, it will expire Sunday night at midnight. If you activate the card Monday evening at pm, it still expires Sunday night at midnight. As a result, you effectively get to use it only for 6 days and 30 minutes.
In that case, you are better off paying for a single ride using the Pay-Per-Ride card and then activating the Unlimited Ride card the next morning. Unlimited Ride cards cannot be shared by two people. In fact, there is a roughly minute delay between each swipe to prevent the card from being used by more than one person. As noted before, on the back of every MetroCard you'll find a printed physical expiration date. Do not confuse the printed physical card expiration date with the paid expiration of the Unlimited Ride time window.
A card can carry "time ", "value", or both. In other words, you can add a dollar value to an Unlimited Ride card or buy time to an existing Pay-Per-Ride card. When this happens, the time portion always takes precedence when you swipe it at a turnstile it will activate the time window as necessary. After the time portion of the card has expired, it will then and only then start draining the value of your card.
This also implies that you cannot use this card with multiple people as a second swipe on the card will be denied as "Just used" despite the card carrying monetary value in addition.
Lastly, MetroCards can be refilled. LOL then again I don't know how an unlimited works. With the new expiration date, I believe that if one was to buy several cards at once I don't know why someone would do that , you would only have until the date printed on the cards to use them, regardless of when you swiped the card for the first time. The dates printed on the back of the cards are the expiration dates for the cards themselves, not necessarily the expiration of your unlimited time; kind of like a "shelf-life".
They are printed on the cards before they are even shipped to the stations. If you hold onto a card until the date, then your time will expire on the date of the card.
I think it's a way for the TA to ensure that the cards get used and the money gets spent and people don't stock up on them, just like how they impose limits during a fare hike. VG8: I think the non-refill for the unlimiteds was a security measure, so that the bad nerds won't just figure a way to "refill" their card at home. As for waste, the TA tried with the MC disposal box attached to the station MC readers, but collection wasn't kept up, and New Yorkers are New Yorkers: they just throw the cards on the ground.
That's not the point though. Why create more waste and force people to get a new card when they could simply have the option of refilling that card for another 7 days? We're not talking about balances here. I'm saying make the cards have the option to be reused again. It would save the money and create less waste in the system. What you could do is allow passengers to refill the cards after the date in which the card has expired from usage.
I actually do recycle my Metrocards instead of throwing them in the garbage, but the majority of the folks don't. By using this site, you agree to our Terms of Use. Existing user? And it's worth mentioning that this doesn't work for the Metro cards that can be bought at the Air Train station - at any vending machine they allow only to add Money. If you are a New Yorker, I think it is better to have both per-per-ride and timed metrocards at the same time in your pocket so that you can use the former for select bus services or airtrain while you continue using the latter for regular subway rides.
