And starting in , this allowed him to make a series of startling discoveries about the origins of complexity. The papers Wolfram published quickly had a major impact, and laid the groundwork for the emerging field that Wolfram called complex systems research. Through the mids, Wolfram continued his work on complexity, discovering a number of fundamental connections between computation and nature, and inventing such concepts as computational irreducibility.
Wolfram's work led to a wide range of applications—and provided the main scientific foundations for such initiatives as complexity theory and artificial life. Wolfram himself used his ideas to develop a new randomness generation system and a new approach to computational fluid dynamics—both of which are now in widespread use.
Following his scientific work on complex systems research, in Wolfram founded the first journal in the field, Complex Systems , and its first research center. Wolfram began the development of Mathematica in late The first version of Mathematica was released on June 23, , and was immediately hailed as a major advance in computing.
In the years that followed, the popularity of Mathematica grew rapidly, and Wolfram Research became established as a world leader in the software industry, widely recognized for excellence in both technology and business.
From its beginnings as a technical computing system, Mathematica has grown dramatically in scope over the years—and over the course of more than a quarter of a century, it has been responsible for many important inventions and discoveries in a vast range of fields and industries, as well as being a central tool in the education of generations of students.
In , Wolfram began to divide his time between Mathematica development and scientific research. Building on his work from the mids, and now with Mathematica as a tool, Wolfram made a rapid succession of major new discoveries. By the mids his discoveries led him to develop a fundamentally new conceptual framework, which he then spent the remainder of the s applying not only to new kinds of questions, but also to many existing foundational problems in physics, biology, computer science, mathematics and several other fields.
After more than ten years of highly concentrated work, Wolfram finally described his achievements in his page book A New Kind of Science. Released on May 14, , the book was widely acclaimed and immediately became a bestseller. It's here. Need an equation?
The exchange rate of Wons to GBP? Instead of ploughing through websites with cookies and junk info, Wolfram Alpha has it all. It's the single most genius app I've ever purchased and there's no issues, no glitches. The only downside is the lack of predictive text but asides from that this app is perfect!
Incredible Mar 17, This app is amazingly good for STEM majors science, technology, engineering, math. It is not a search engine like google as some of the other reviewers seem to believe. You should know the step-by-step solutions are sometimes not helpful e.
Still an amazing app though. I think many people that would like it would be content with just the free part of the website. Oct 15, By Michael Reed. One of the coolest, intriguing concepts ever, a few UI design annoyances, but otherwise so well done. Aug 17, By Tehya This app is honestly better than Google. It has information on everything I need instantly, without looking through multiple web pages to no avail.
They do not promote any political party over the other. It makes homework so easy, giving step-by-step solutions. I would recommend this app to everybody. Thank you WolframAlpha! See all positive reviews. Aug 27, By Joshua Berger. Why even offer an app that doesn't have the same features as the website?
Forget this app, it won't do half of what you ask it. Use their website if you actually need wolfram alpha. By Island Life. The switch to a subscription model that limits the information available i. I used to be excited because app updates used to be upgrades. But like so many others, WolframAlpha has downgraded the app by pushing a subscription. I keep auto-update off all the time now since so many apps get worse each update. If you just occasionally like to play with numbers, I can no longer recommend it.
Oct 26, By Alexander Koch. No dark theme. Give me back my privileges May 5, By screw nicknamesssssssssssss. Paid for this app years ago when it was just starting out on the app store.
Always had access to full step-by-step solutions, as detailed in the description for the [then] paid version. Recently updated and got downgraded to basic privileges. What a slimy thing to do, the developers have no respect for those who helped get them off their feet. If my review is still 1 star while reading this, then steer clear of the subscription and just use the free version — I paid and got downgraded anyways, so you might too.
So disappointed more. Nov 7, By Lily Chandra. Can't compute anything because I keep getting Error: Invalid AppId with no guidance on what is wrong or what to do next. Needs easier design and Apple Watch interface Sep 12, By hoorayberet Searching with this app should render some great results based on what Wolfram Alpha's website states.
Yet, it is not easy to search for information or get results that help to enhance my life. It seems like it requires a certain way to speak to it, in order to get a certain usefulness.
While that may seem great for certain cases, putting the customer at the center of the product's usefulness will greatly enhance its reach and potential. I feel there is some real limits with this app. Especially with the inability to get detailed information using Siri and from Apple Watch. The app just isn't intended to provide a usefulness.
You would think that chatbots would help to make the user experience even easier. But that may point to the lack of the company's willingness to play with creative ideas in expanding its usefulness. Jan 4, By Adam Svoboda. This app used to be excellent some three to five years ago.
Search engines nowadays are slowly including many features that WolframAlpha has, while it is stuck in one place. Not saying that this is a search engine!
I would agree that this app is in many cases still useful, but overall it is not worth the money. Not mentioning the slow computing speed. The input method isn't even suited for math problems, though that is the most useful feature at least for me.

Masters degree in your pocket Feb 27, By Igotsuckeredbythisapp. Anyone who gives this ap less than five stars is an ignorant fool. Absolute must have for anyone seriously committed to mathematical education by actually learning the material and actually working through textbook problems.
This ap basically gives you the ability to automatically factor polynomials as you develop proofs thereby getting you to the end result step by step. Not for fools this is a tool for learning and man aid to developing formal proofs by allowing you to troubleshoot each step as you go without having to constantly reference tables of identities. Basically an abstract algebra calculator much cheaper than their full product Mathematica.
Nov 5, By Todd VanHaren. Excellent app! Has endless information if you use it correctly. Aug 13, By Zachary Fluke. Such a useful app, and even a fun app when you want to learn cray new things like how many grains of sand are on Earth! Highly recommended. It's a phenomenal one time 3 dollar investment. Subscription warning is bogus!! May 14, By Hawk I use the free version of wolfram alpha online all the time. It does NOT break down the step by step procedure So then there IS a huge difference between the free online version and this paid app.
Again, for 3 dollars you will see the step by step breakdown for the math solutions Learn More. Up to six family members will be able to use this app with Family Sharing enabled. App Store Preview.
